Listening Task (Picture Drawing)

Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Procedures:
  1. Teacher asks the students to sit with their partner.
  2. At the beginning, teacher asks them to draw each item according to its given presupposition.
  3. Since the activity is done in pair work, the teacher must inform that one person will play role to describe the picture and its preposition whereas the other will attempt to draw it.
Teacher’s Transcript
1.    Hello everyone. Now, take out a piece of paper and see if you can follow these instructions.
2.    First, draw a shape of a rectangle on your paper.
3.  Next, draw a shape of triangle on top of the rectangle and then create a picture of a house using these
 shapes.
4.    Now, draw a picture of a woman standing on the left corner of the house.
5.    Now, draw a picture of a girl running towards the house.
6.    Draw a picture of a car between the house and the woman.
7.    Next, draw a book falling behind the little girl.
8.    Then, draw an airplane above the right corner of your paper. Have you finished?
9.    This is what the picture would look like. (Teacher shows the picture to the students).
Rationale of Picture Drawing Activity
Listening is as important as speaking since it is a communication of a two way streets - there is both sender,
"speaker" and a receiver "listener". This has the benefit of giving the students the opportunity to practice turn-
taking in listening and speaking and using feedback to elicit the details they need from the speaker. Teacher
should convey the message clearly.
